Fire in the 2100 Block of Horncastle Lane

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At 11:43 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from a homeowner located in the 2100 block of Horncastle Lane reporting that their home was filling up with smoke. Naperville 911(PSAP) dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel, including an incident commander and incident safety officer to the reported address. All seven residents who were home at the time were able to safely evacuate prior to the fire department’s arrival.

At 11:48 p.m., the first vehicle arrived on the scene and found a large volume of fire engulfing the entire front of the two-story residence. The fire was beginning to spread to the neighboring home. Fire crews deployed several hose lines and began a simultaneous operation. An offensive attack was made on the neighboring home to quickly extinguish the fire and limit the amount of smoke and heat damage. A defensive approach was taken on the main fire building due to the large volume of fire weakening several structural members. Crews began attacking this fire from the exterior of the home.

Once the main body of the fire was knocked down, fire crews carefully made their way inside to extinguish the remaining hotspots. At 12:06 a.m., both fires were deemed under control. Fire companies remained on the scene another hour extinguishing the remaining hotspots.

Naperville Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Naperville Police, Naperville Electric, the Red Cross and Nicor. Warrenville and Plainfield Fire Departments assisted with coverage during the emergency. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Naperville Fire Department fire investigation team. There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters while operating on scene. The home that was the site of the primary fire was deemed to be uninhabitable by the Naperville Transportation, Engineering and Development Team. The neighboring home was deemed habitable. The fire is estimated to have caused more than $400,000 in damages.
