Electrical Contractor Registration
Permitting, Plans and Licensing Portal Now Available
Customers are now able to apply for this permit though the City’s Permitting, Plans and Licensing Portal. The new portal gathers all of the information needed to apply, pay for, and manage permits in one convenient place. It is designed for use on a desktop/laptop computer.
The City of Naperville operates and maintains its own electrical distribution system. Please refer to the Department of Public Utilities - Electric (DPU-E) service rules and policies for service standards, as these will be different from Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) standards.
Regulations regarding this type of permit are detailed in the City's Municipal Codebook (3-5A).
Effective Dec. 31, 2022, the City of Naperville no longer renews electrical licenses that were originally issued through the City. Impacted electricians will need to test for a new license at a participating municipality or through the ICC.
Testing Sites for Electricians:
- International Code Council
- Electrical - We accept current certifications from the International Code Council for the categories of Standard Master Electrician (commercial); Standard Residential Electrician (residential); and Standard Journeyman Sign Electrician OR Standard Master Electrician Certification (Signage Electrical Contractor) in lieu of municipal testing.
